At a Glance

Entebbe sits on a peninsula in Lake Victoria and hosts Uganda's international airport. It's considerably quieter than Kampala, roughly 40 kilometres away, which makes it the more sensible place to spend an arrival or departure night before continuing to Bwindi or Kibale.

What to Do

The Entebbe Botanical Gardens on the lakeshore are good for an easy morning's birding. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a refuge for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees, is reachable by boat and makes a straightforward half or full day for travellers with time before an onward flight.

Where to Stay

Lakeside lodges and garden hotels close to the airport, generally used as a single night at the start or end of a Uganda itinerary.

Onward Travel

Most Uganda itineraries continue by light aircraft to airstrips near Bwindi or Kibale, or by road for travellers who want to see the countryside — a considerably longer option that should be planned deliberately rather than by default.

FAQs

Should I stay in Entebbe or Kampala?
Entebbe, for almost all safari itineraries — it's quieter, greener, and minutes from the airport rather than an hour or more through Kampala traffic.
Is Ngamba Island worth visiting?
For travellers with a spare half day and an interest in primate conservation, yes — though it's a sanctuary rather than a wild-tracking experience.
