At a Glance
Kibale is a tract of moist tropical forest in western Uganda holding an exceptional density and diversity of primates. It's widely regarded as the best place in East Africa for chimpanzee tracking, with a large habituated community and consistently high encounter rates.
Chimpanzee Tracking
Tracking generally takes place on relatively flat forest trails — considerably less demanding than gorilla trekking — with contact time capped once the community is located. Chimpanzees move fast and noisily through the canopy, so the experience is more kinetic and less contemplative than time with gorillas.
Chimpanzee Habituation
A full-day habituation experience is available, following researchers and a community from their morning nest departure — a much longer, more immersive alternative to the standard tracking permit, and worth considering for travellers with a serious primate interest.
Beyond Chimpanzees
Kibale holds a notable number of other primate species, and the neighbouring Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary — a community-run project — offers excellent guided birding and primate walks.
Best Time to Visit
Year-round, with easier trail conditions in the drier months.
