The Great Migration, explained

The Great Migration is the continuous, year-round movement of roughly two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, following rainfall rather than a fixed calendar. It isn't a single event you either catch or miss — it's a cycle always underway somewhere in the ecosystem.

Calving takes place on the southern plains roughly December to March. Herds move north and west through mid-year, generally reaching the Mara River between July and October, where the crossings most associated with the migration tend to occur. By November they're typically heading south again.

Because the pattern is driven by rainfall, timing shifts year to year — sometimes by weeks. We plan for probability, not certainty, and build in flexibility to reposition. Read the month-by-month guide.

Tanzania combines naturally with its neighbours, and for travellers with the time a multi-country route often makes more sense than treating each country as a separate trip.
