December–March: Calving Season
The herds concentrate on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu area (technically within Ngorongoro Conservation Area), where the majority of wildebeest calves are born within a compressed window, drawing significant predator activity.
April–May: Movement Begins
As the short rains taper and grass is depleted, herds begin moving north and west through the central and western Serengeti; this period sees the heaviest rainfall and some of the quietest camps.
June–July: Western Corridor
The migration typically moves through the Western Corridor, including Grumeti River crossings, en route toward the north.
July–October: Northern Serengeti & Mara River Crossings
The herds generally reach the northern Serengeti and the Mara River, where the dramatic river crossings most associated with the migration typically occur; herds may move back and forth across the Tanzania-Kenya border during this period.
November: Return South
As the short rains begin, the herds generally start moving back south through the eastern and central Serengeti toward the southern plains, completing the annual cycle.
