Nyerere at a Glance

Nyerere National Park — created from the northern section of the former Selous Game Reserve and renamed after Tanzania's first president — is centred on the Rufiji River and its network of lakes and channels. It is one of Tanzania's largest protected wilderness areas and remains far less visited than the Northern Circuit, both because of its size and because it's reached almost entirely by light aircraft.

Wildlife of Nyerere

The Rufiji River corridor supports large hippo and crocodile populations, alongside healthy numbers of African wild dog, elephant, and buffalo. The park's lower visitor density means sightings often feel considerably more private than equivalent encounters on the Northern Circuit.

Best Areas to Stay

Camps are generally positioned directly on or near the Rufiji River and its associated lakes, prioritising boat-safari access alongside traditional game drives.

Luxury Lodges & Camps in Nyerere

Recommended properties include Sand Rivers Selous and Beho Beho, both positioned for river access and walking-safari terrain. Internal link: Nyerere Lodges

Signature Experiences

Nyerere is one of the few Tanzanian parks where boat safaris, walking safaris, and night game drives are all commonly available, offering a broader activity range than most Northern Circuit parks. Internal link: Experiences

Best Time to Visit Nyerere

The dry season (June–October/November) is generally preferred for game viewing and easier river navigation; some camps close during the heaviest rains (roughly March–May).

How to Get There

Nyerere is reached by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam or as a fly-in connection from the Northern Circuit, with flight times generally under an hour from Dar es Salaam.

Commonly paired with Ruaha for a dedicated Southern Circuit itinerary, or combined with Zanzibar given the shared Dar es Salaam gateway. Internal link: 7-Day Southern Circuit Safari: Ruaha & Nyerere

FAQs

Is Nyerere the same as Selous Game Reserve?
Nyerere National Park was created from the northern, tourism-focused portion of the former Selous Game Reserve; the two names refer to overlapping but not identical areas, and older references to "Selous" often describe what is now Nyerere.
Is Nyerere worth visiting instead of the Serengeti?
It offers a genuinely different experience — river-based activities, lower visitor density, and a broader range of activities — rather than a substitute for the Serengeti's open-plains wildlife density.
